The Ghana Philanthropy Week(GPW) aims to respond to the call by practitioners, institutions and the sector at large to find common narratives, collaborative solutions and co-created pathways to change. The week-long activities will include and welcome a variety of philanthropic actors: foundations, funders and philanthropy support organisations. The other key partners include philanthropy and social investment networks, associations, giving platforms, and think tanks, and the diversity of philanthropy infrastructure organisations including informal solidarity networks. The #GPW2024 aims to elevate the philanthropy sector in Ghana as a key stakeholder for development through an annual collaborative week-long series of joint activities. This event will bring the Philanthropy Ghana Coalition and strategic partners to co-create innovations, positioning key actors to promote a supportive and enabling environment for philanthropy in Ghana and West Africa. This will facilitate greater synergy and coordination, enabling the sector to collectively advocate for policy issues, address emerging concerns in the operating environment, and establish a high-level stakeholder platform for peer learning and philanthropy support.
There has been a widespread call from various networks to strengthen sub-regional, including West African, discussions and policy advocacy to foster a more enabling environment. WINGS and other partners have conducted philanthropy mapping exercises in West Africa with evidence of the philanthropy sector as a key development partner if well coordinated. In response to this call and the interest shown by philanthropy coalition members and strategic partners, the Ghana Philanthropy Week & West Africa Network Collaborative Initiative has been co-created. This project aims to coordinate philanthropy activities in Ghana through an annual Ghana Philanthropy Week celebration. By partnering with coalition members, government agencies, and key philanthropy support organisations, the initiative seeks to elevate philanthropy as a pivotal player in localising and collaborating towards the achievement of the SDGs in Ghana and West Africa. Currently, there is a growing effort by the Government to engage corporate philanthropy groups, underscoring the importance of a unified voice through the Philanthropy Week for similar engagements. In addition to avoiding duplication and competition among actors, the Philanthropy Ghana Community and the West Africa Philanthropy Network will benefit from sharing best practices and addressing knowledge gaps in philanthropy, which have impacted the sector’s recognition. The Philanthropy Ghana Week forms part of Philanthropy Ghana’s 2028 Strategic Plan with the overall goal of shaping philanthropy systems and practices in Ghana. Specifically to develop, promote and host philanthropy convenings in Ghana to achieve a more just, equitable and sustainable society.
